STONE TONE CONCRETE STAIN

INTRODUCTION

BECAUSE STONE TONE STAIN IS NOT A TYPICAL COATING, WE OFFER A SPECIAL INTRODUCTION TO THIS TECHNICAL BULLETIN.

STONE TONE STAINS ARE MADE FROM ACID SOLUTIONS, WETTING AGENTS AND METALLIC IONS (PARTICLES). WHEN THIS SOLUTION IS PLACED ON CONCRETE IT CAN COLOR THE CONCRETE (CEMENT) BY CHEMICALLY COMBINING THE METALLIC IONS WITH PARTICLES IN THE CONCRETE TO FORM OXIDES. FOR EXAMPLE, THE FORMATION OF IRON OXIDE WILL PRODUCE A REDDISH OR REDDISH BLACK COLOR.

THIS PROCEDURE IS NOT A DYE-TECHNIQUE. AS YOU WOULD HAVE WHEN DYING OR STAINING LEATHER OR WOOD. LEATHER DYES AND WOOD STAINS HAVE COLORANTS (PIGMENTS) IN THE SOLUTIONS TO PRODUCE A PREDETERMINED COLOR. BLACK SHOE DYE HAS BLACK PIGMENT IN IT AND YOUR SHOES WILL TURN OUT THE BLACK COLOR OF THE BLACK PIGMENTS.  ALSO, THE LEATHER WILL BE DYED AN EVEN BLACK COLOR.

STONE TONE STAINS MAY NOT EVEN APPEAR TO BE THE COLOR THEY PRODUCE. THE BLACK STAIN ACTUALLY HAS A BROWNISH COLOR, BUT STILL THE METALLIC PARTICLES IN THE SOLUTIONS COMBINE WITH THE CONCRETE TO PRODUCE THE BLACK OXIDE COLOR.

AND WHAT ABOUT UNIFORM COLOR? BECAUSE CONCRETE IS NOT UNIFORM, THE REACTION IS NOT UNIFORM, THEREFORE THE COLOR IS NOT UNIFORM. SOME AREAS ARE DARKER THAN OTHER AREAS, IF YOU THINK OF HOW MARBLE OR FLAGSTONE ROCKS ARE COLORED, YOU HAVE THE IDEA. IF YOU WANT UNIFORM COLOR, DON'T USE STONE TONE STAINS. KEMIKO COLORED WAXES CAN BE USED TO MAKE COLORS LOOK RICHER, MORE EVEN, AND PROVIDE THAT "WET LOOK".

STONE TONE STAINS ARE NOT EFFECTIVE ON MANY SURFACES.  MATERIALS SUCH AS TILES AND CLAY PRODUCTS LACK THE CEMENT MATERIAL NECESSARY FOR A COLOR REACTION. EVEN OLD, WEATHERED CONCRETE IS USUALLY NOT GOOD FOR THIS STAINING TECHNIQUE. IF YOU STICK TO CLEAN, UNETCHED, UNPAINTED, ONE TO TWELVE-MONTH-OLD CONCRETE, YOU WILL PROBABLY HAVE THE GREATEST SUCCESS.

BECAUSE THIS IS NOT AN EXACT COLORING TECHNIQUE, KEMIKO CONCRETE PRODUCTS CORPORATION CANNOT GUARANTEE THE RESULTS. THE PRODUCT IS GUARANTEED TO BE MANUFACTURED PROPERLY. MONEY WILL NOT BE REFUNDED IF YOU ARE NOT HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS.

IF YOU DECIDE TO CONTINUE, PLEASE REALIZE ONE GALLON OF STAIN WILL BE MIXED WITH ONE GALLON OF WATER AND THIS MIXTURE WILL STAIN APPROXIMATELY 400 SQUARE FEET.

WARNING

DO NOT USE THE BLUE OR GREEN STAINS ON SLAG CONCRETE. SLAG IS THE BYPRODUCT OF AN IRON BLAST FURNACE. THE SLAG IS GROUND VERY FINE AND USED IN PLACE OF SOME OF THE CEMENT. THE SLAG MATERIAL CAUSES THE STAIN TO TURN BLACK.
